How to Deliver Great Blog Content

December 4th, 2008

Chris Brogan is a social media veteran who has huge following on his blog and twitter. Taking from all this experience Mr Brogan has just made a post explaining how to deliver great blog content. This will be on my bookmarks for a long time. Below is my take on a few of his points:

  1. Brevity rules. Can you say it briefly? I can easily relate to this one since it is something Garr Reynolds always emphasizes when he is talking about presentation delivery: your audience attention span is short so you have to be brief or they will stop listening to you.
  2. Start at the main point, then work the story up. Say the most important thing first so the audience will have a reason to listen to you and if they stop paying attention they will at least remember your main point.
  3. Analogies help people understand things better. On Made to Stick the Heath brothers call this “The Pomelo Schema”: by comparing something people don’t know to something they know you make it easier for them to understand what you are talking about and to remember what you said later. An example: “Our new car is like a BMW, but cheaper”.
  4. Depending on how you write, go back and see if you can cut out more. Reduce. Reduce. Reduce. Mark Twain once wrote “I didn’t have time to write a short letter, so I wrote a long one instead.” Being short and concise is difficult but it always pays off.
  5. Learn about Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Search Engine Marketing (SEM). If you have a Wordpress blog, here’s a great guide.
